Strengthening
social cohesion

The Possehl Foundation supports many of the more than 300 registered non-profit organisations that enrich life in Lübeck. Many of these organisations are sports clubs that also carry out important youth work and are lively meeting places in the city's districts. This work is supported by the voluntary commitment of their members. The foundation also supports charitable organisations and initiatives financially in the implementation of social projects. In this way, we also want to give migrants in Lübeck access to all local (educational) programmes.

Funding examples

Project Wellcome- practical post-natal help

Wellcome enables young parents to get help from dedicated volunteers in the first year of their baby’s life, and defines itself as a modern local community project. Its main aim is to relieve the pressure on mothers. Families get a visit from a trained assistant once a week on request.
The project is organised by the Catholic Family Education Centre in Lübeck. There are currently 44 volunteers here, who support 76 families with over 1600 hours of voluntary work and practical assistance. The project is integrated into the network of infant care assistance, and is an important source of contacts to birthing centres, midwives, paediatricians and family centres.
The project is funded by donations, and since 2011 the position of the coordinator has been secured by regular financial support from the Possehl Foundation. The coordinator’s role includes registering the different requests for assistance, assembling a suitable wellcome team, providing advice and support during the period of assistance and ensuring that the volunteers feel seen and appreciated.

Development of the "Falkenwiese" sports centre

Since 2019, a sports and exercise park with playgrounds, a skate park, climbing wall, basketball, beach volleyball, handball and soccer pitches and fitness equipment has been located between Altstadtinsel and Wakenitz. Here, all Lübeck residents can enjoy outdoor sports spontaneously and without club membership. The “Haus des Sports” is now being built here, creating new attractive areas for sport and socializing. The building is designed as an “open house” in which up to 20 types of sport can be practiced. Three clubs will be the owners and, in accordance with the usage agreement with the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, will make free usage capacities available to other club sportspeople.

Solidarity Action Movement Europe SAME

The European youth network SAME is spreading the idea of a Social Day throughout Europe. School pupils volunteer to do a day’s paid work and then donate their wages. They not only support projects for young people of their own age in other countries, but also learn about social activism at the same time and set an example for an open and tolerant society. Over 300,000 young people now take part in a Social Day.
SAME is based in Lübeck and is expanding its activities for more interaction and solidarity in Europe.
