Our funding areas
The beauty of the city
Lübeck's Old Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. There are over 1,400 listed monuments on the old town island that need to be conserved and protected. The Possehl Foundation supports the refurbishment of these historic buildings in line with the applicable requirements.
The Foundation has also adopted the preservation of "Lübeck's Seven Spires", the five Lübeck city centre churches, as an additional long-term project. From 1950 to the present day, the Possehl Foundation has contributed well over €55 million to preserving and shaping Lübeck's historic city centre in all its architectural diversity.
Non-profit organisations
The Possehl Foundation supports many of the more than 300 registered non-profit organisations that enrich life in Lübeck. Many of these organisations are sports clubs that also carry out important youth work and are lively meeting places in the city's districts. This work is supported by the voluntary commitment of their members. The foundation also supports charitable organisations and initiatives financially in the implementation of social projects. In this way, we also want to give migrants in Lübeck access to all local (educational) programmes.

Education at all levels is a focus of the Possehl Foundation’s work. In close cooperation with the town council, and in dialogue with other foundations in Lübeck, we want to help ensure that nursery schools, schools and youth clubs in Lübeck are able to offer children and teenagers in Lübeck a wealth of opportunities to enjoy learning and acquire life skills – regardless of their social or cultural background.

In the field of culture and science we sponsor a particularly wide range of projects. One aspect is the funding of outstanding research and teaching at the higher education institutions in the city. Our funding focuses on special research projects, endowments for professorships and the technical equipment for scientific work.
The Lübeck Cultural Foundation, Lübeck Theatre, the Lübeck College of Music and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival all receive regular funding from the Possehl Foundation. But smaller initiatives also keep culture alive and vibrant in Lübeck and are sponsored by the Foundation.
People in social hardship
When Emil Possehl was alive, “the alleviation of hardship” mentioned in the Foundation’s articles of association mainly benefited injured war veterans and their families. Today, the Possehl Foundation finances a range of programmes for people experiencing social hardship.

In addition to the sponsorship mentioned above, the Possehl Foundation also aims to commit resources to other socially relevant topics and to develop and implement projects in cooperation with various partners.
