Possehl Scholarship for Architecture 2025: Focus on climate and community
14.05.2025
The Possehl Foundation awarded the Possehl Scholarship for Architecture to students at Lübeck Technical University at Kulturwerft Gollan on Tuesday, 13 May 2025. The scholarship provides funding for study trips abroad, which enable the students to gain new impressions and experiences for their academic and professional careers.
Lübeck: The award ceremony for the Possehl Scholarship for Architecture took place on the evening of 13 May 2025 as part of this year’s exhibition of work by the Architecture and Urban Planning Department of Lübeck TU. Thalisa Hauschildt (Bachelor in Urban Planning), Marvin Höschen (Master in Urban Planning) and Emma Segelmann (Bachelor in Architecture) each won a scholarship of €3,000. The winners were chosen by a six-person jury: Ingo Siegmund (BDA Lübeck), Inga Mueller-Haagen (Architekturforum) and Carsten Groth (Possehl Foundation), as well as Kendra Busche, Guido Neubeck and Lydia Rintz, all professors at Lübeck TU.
Sustainable urban development, from Lübeck to Singapore
Hauschildt was selected for her projects “Gemeinschaft (er)leben” in Lübeck St. Gertrud and “StörWerkStadt” in Itzehoe. The jury praised, “the successful interplay of public, semi-public and private spaces, and the intelligent use of commercial units as noise barriers”. The student plans to use the scholarship to travel to Singapore. “The city state is a world leader in terms of sustainable urban development, innovative infrastructure and effective land use, so my visit there will enable me to experience examples of best practice up close and engage in a process of analysis and critical reflection”, said Thalisa Hauschildt.
Transforming mobility is essential to make cities more liveable
Höschen convinced the jury with his project “PRIMA! – Zukunft im Bestand”. His plan described a functional and architectural upgrade for an urban district in Hamburg-Wandsbek. The jury made the following comments on the Master’s student’s work: “Marvin Höschen’s work combines contemporary topics in sustainable development with high-quality spaces, and demonstrates a great talent for design, combined with highly precise depiction at all the different levels of scale.” Höschen intends to go on an European tour to Austria, Switzerland and Spain, where he plans to examine urban solutions that focus on the key subject of the future – the transformation of mobility in cities. “I am particularly interested in how cities go about reducing individual car traffic, redesigning public spaces and enhancing areas earmarked for urban renewal”, said Marvin Höschen.
Architectural solutions to climate change adaptation
Emma Segelmann is planning a trip around Spain, taking in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville. She wants to look at architectural solutions that have found innovative ways to adapt to the challenges of climate change. “I very much hope to find inspiration for architectural solutions to climate change adaptation and the use of sunshades and canopies as functional and design elements”, said Segelmann. She won the travel scholarship for her designs for a school building, “Park als Schule” in Eutin, a workshop building on the campus of Lübeck TU and an archaeological museum in the historic Tudor Halls at Roddenkoppel in Lübeck. “The tasks they were set were challenging, but the three study projects were carried out from the initial concept to the final details with a visible dedication to high-quality design, and were presented in compelling and atmospheric ways”, said the jury in its statement.
Prof. Dr Wolfgang Sandberger, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Possehl Foundation: “I am impressed by the plans and am delighted that the scholarships from the Possehl Foundation will support the prize-winning students. They will acquire new perspectives and experiences for their ongoing studies and their professional careers.”
Special prize and travel expense allowances
A special prize of €1,000 went to Laurenz Braun (Bachelor in Architecture), whose undergraduate work already shows a very high level of spatial and structural awareness. Five other students also received travel allowances of €500 each. From the Bachelor’s degree course in Architecture: Hans Höfer, Christian Rohwer, Frida Voelkel and Tim Philipp Wrobel. From the Master’s degree course in Urban Planning: Marlen Otto. The awards will help them to plan study trips abroad too.
The Possehl Scholarship for Architecture: new places, new perspectives
The scholarship is awarded every two years by the Possehl Foundation to talented students of architecture and urban planning at Lübeck Technical University. It aims to enable travel outside Lübeck that encourages academic exchanges and personal development. The Foundation is thus continuing the tradition of its founder, Emil Possehl, who recognised the value of travel scholarships for innovation and social progress more than 100 years ago.
Work exhibition from 13-15 May in Kulturwerft Gollan
